TSMC closes at NT$902, boosts market (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's stock market rallied on Tuesday (April 29) as shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電), the world's largest contract chipmaker, closed at NT$902 (about US$27.93), gaining NT$5 or 0.55%. The broader semiconductor sector advanced 0.64%, while financial stocks surged 1.48%. Computer peripherals and electronic components sectors also posted solid gains of 0.64% and 1.19%, respectively.

Strong earnings reports from major U.S. technology companies — Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft — have fueled investor confidence, propelling Wall Street to a five-day winning streak. This upbeat global sentiment spilled over to Taiwan's market, where the benchmark weighted index jumped 198.22 points to finish at 20,232.63, representing a robust 0.99% gain for the day.

TSMC shares opened at NT$897 (US$27.77) and traded between a high of NT$902 (US$27.93) and a low of NT$893 (US$27.65), with its stable performance anchoring the broader market advance. Chipmaker MediaTek (聯發科) exhibited notable strength, climbing NT$20 to close at NT$1,370 (US$42.41), a 1.48% gain. Electronics manufacturing giant Hon Hai (鴻海), known internationally as Foxconn, edged up NT$0.5 to NT$143 (US$4.43), rising 0.35%. These electronics heavyweights provided substantial market support, though Quanta Computer (廣達) moved against the prevailing trend, finishing lower and somewhat tempering the technology sector's upward trajectory.

Across Taiwan's market, electronic, semiconductor, server, and financial sectors all posted significant gains, with electronic stocks spearheading the advance and underpinning the market's robust performance. Daily trading volume swelled to NT$238.643 billion (approximately US$7.39 billion). The over-the-counter market also finished positively, gaining 3.10 points to reach 222.51, a rise of 1.41%, with transactions totaling NT$88.159 billion (US$2.73 billion). ★
