TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Intel's chief executive Lip-Bu Tan (陳立武) has acknowledged meeting with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei (魏哲家) to discuss possible strategic partnerships between the semiconductor powerhouses. Tan disclosed details of the high-level discussion during an analyst call on Friday (April 25), signaling potential shifts in the competitive chip manufacturing landscape.
During the call, Tan characterized TSMC as "an excellent partner" while emphasizing his personal connections with Wei and TSMC's influential founder Morris Chang (張忠謀). The Intel CEO explained that their discussions focused on identifying collaborative opportunities that could strengthen both companies' positions in the fiercely competitive semiconductor industry.
The meeting follows Tan's appearance at TSMC's annual technology symposium in Silicon Valley earlier this week, where Reuters journalists observed him with Wei. Tan, who assumed Intel's top position just last month, brings impressive credentials to the role, including an MBA from the University of San Francisco and a master's in nuclear engineering from MIT. His industry standing is further validated by his receipt of the Dr. Morris Chang Exemplary Leadership Award.
The discussions take place as TSMC intensifies its environmental initiatives, with plans to achieve Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) net-zero carbon reduction standards by 2035. The Taiwanese chipmaking giant is simultaneously pushing to have advanced manufacturing processes account for 80% of its revenue. Industry analysts suggest the timing of these high-level talks could indicate Intel's interest in aligning with TSMC's sustainability roadmap while securing access to cutting-edge production capabilities. ★
