TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's top intelligence official has launched a coordinated effort to dismantle Chinese spy networks operating within the island democracy. National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen (蔡明彥) revealed Wednesday (April 9) that his agency has intensified evidence-gathering operations in connection with recently uncovered espionage cases linked to Chinese intelligence services. During a high-level security briefing before the Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee at the Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament, Tsai underscored his agency's determination to pursue swift investigations and implement severe punishments against those involved in espionage activities.

The intelligence chief emphasized his agency's methodical approach to building legal cases against suspected foreign agents, noting that all evidence of unusual or illegal activities would be systematically documented and transferred to prosecutors for formal legal proceedings. Tsai revealed an ongoing interagency security initiative between the NSB and the Ministry of Justice (MOJ, 法務部), focused on comprehensively reassessing Taiwan's national security legal framework. The intelligence director disclosed that he has engaged in multiple strategic consultations with Minister of Justice Cheng Ming-chien (鄭銘謙), specifically aimed at enhancing the resilience and effectiveness of the island's national security legislation.

Addressing the serious nature of the threat, Tsai characterized espionage activities as fundamental acts of betrayal that directly undermine Taiwan's national interests and security apparatus. The intelligence chief provided a firm assurance to lawmakers that his investigative teams would pursue all leads with equal vigor, emphasizing that political affiliations would not influence the scope or thoroughness of the counterintelligence operations. The parliamentary session, which convened earlier in the day, brought together Tsai and several other senior intelligence officials who had been summoned by the Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee to deliver a comprehensive "National Intelligence Work and National Security Bureau Business Report" and respond to legislators' inquiries regarding Taiwan's security posture.
