TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei's municipal government unveiled a new incentive program Tuesday (April 8) aimed at transforming the capital city's hospitality sector into a model of environmental sustainability. The Department of Information and Tourism (台北市政府觀光傳播局), the agency overseeing the city's tourism development, announced financial rewards for hotels achieving green certifications and for employees making significant environmental contributions. Officials anticipate receiving at least 30 applications in the program's inaugural year. Chueh Yu-ling (闕玉玲), who leads the department's Tourism Industry Division (觀光產業科), emphasized to the Central News Agency (CNA) that the initiative aligns with the global commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and recognizes the hospitality industry's crucial role in this worldwide environmental effort.

The program establishes a comprehensive framework for participation, recognizing hotels that secure either domestic credentials such as Taiwan's Green Building Label or internationally recognized standards including Green Travel Seal (GTS), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and various ISO environmental certifications. Individual hospitality workers with at least two years of employment who have made noteworthy contributions to environmental initiatives or low-carbon tourism promotion will also be eligible for recognition. During her announcement, Chueh showcased several pioneering establishments already embodying the program's vision, including the luxury Regent Taipei (台北晶華酒店), which has achieved the rigorous EarthCheck certification, and the Palais de Chine Hotel (君品酒店), which has eliminated single-use plastic bottles by installing sparkling water dispensers on guest floors. She also highlighted the Star Hostel Taipei Main Station (信星青年旅館), a property specifically constructed around eco-friendly architectural and operational principles.

Tourism officials indicated that the formal application process would commence before year's end, with successful candidates receiving a combination of official certificates, commemorative medals, and monetary rewards to recognize their environmental achievements. The initiative serves a dual purpose: elevating participating hotels' corporate profiles while positioning them to benefit from the growing market emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) credentials. Industry reaction appears cautiously positive, with Chao I-jen (趙一任), who chairs the Taipei Hotel Association (台北市旅館商業同業公會), the city's primary hospitality trade organization, acknowledging some uncertainty regarding specific application criteria while expressing broad industry support for government measures that align with global sustainability trends.
