TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's former Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) publicly called on former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Tuesday (April 8) to spearhead crucial negotiations with the United States while advocating for targeted changes in the current government's ministerial lineup. In a detailed Facebook post, Lu presented five strategic recommendations focused on recalibrating Taiwan's diplomatic approach and enhancing its position in global affairs.

The veteran politician emphasized Taiwan's need for greater self-confidence in international relations, warning against policies that might inadvertently diminish the island's diplomatic standing. Lu specifically advocated for a thorough evaluation of Taiwan's diplomatic corps serving in key strategic regions, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, and across the European Union. Her proposed diplomatic personnel adjustments reflect a broader vision to enhance Taiwan's global influence and diplomatic effectiveness amid evolving geopolitical challenges.

In response to Lu's public comments, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (民進黨) also issued a statement on its official Facebook page outlining five concrete initiatives designed to address the concerns raised. Central to the party's response was a commitment to pursue more equitable tariff arrangements with the United States, specifically proposing that future trade negotiations begin with a zero-tariff baseline. This economic strategy aims to strengthen bilateral commercial relationships while establishing more balanced terms of trade between the longtime allies.

The governing party further announced a comprehensive industrial support package alongside a forward-looking economic development roadmap extending into the medium and long term. Party officials presented a novel strategic framework branded as "Taiwan Plus One, Taiwan Plus the U.S.," designed to diversify the island's international economic relationships while reinforcing its special commercial bond with America. This multifaceted approach reflects Taiwan's determination to broaden its global economic presence while navigating the complexities of international trade politics.

Democratic Progressive Party leaders further revealed plans for a comprehensive industry outreach initiative, framed as a listening tour to gather input from various economic sectors. The announcement highlighted Taiwan's historical economic resilience, citing the island's successful navigation of major disruptions including the Asian financial crisis, the worldwide financial collapse of 2008, and the recent economic turbulence caused by the global pandemic. Party representatives expressed optimism about securing cross-party cooperation in the Legislative Yuan (Taiwan's parliament) to advance these economic initiatives and usher in a revitalized phase of Taiwan's economic development.

Political analysts note that Taiwan's navigation of these intricate diplomatic and economic challenges will likely be influenced significantly by both Lu's high-profile recommendations and the governing party's responsive policy framework. The interplay between these competing visions for Taiwan's international engagement strategy has captured the attention of regional observers, who will monitor closely how these proposals translate into concrete policy actions and ultimately affect Taiwan's position in the international community.
