TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The National Immigration Agency (移民署) reaffirmed on Tuesday (April 8) that residents of Taiwan are prohibited from holding household registration or passports from the People's Republic of China, as outlined in the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area (臺灣地區與大陸地區人民關係條例). This legislation is designed to ensure orderly exchanges across the Taiwan Strait by enforcing a singular household registration system.
The agency has approved around 140,000 Chinese spouses for residency in Taiwan, with the majority having already submitted proof of renouncing their original nationality. However, some individuals have yet to provide this crucial documentation. To accommodate those who registered or obtained a mainland passport prior to the legislative amendment, the agency has extended a six-month grace period for them to submit the required proof.
For those encountering significant challenges in acquiring proof of nationality renunciation, the agency has encouraged individuals to report their issues. In response, the agency will work in collaboration with the Mainland Affairs Council (陸委會) and the Straits Exchange Foundation (海基會) to seek feasible solutions. The agency remains dedicated to safeguarding the rights of long-term residents who comply with regulations and identify with the Republic of China (ROC, 中華民國), providing legal assistance to those facing authentic hurdles in their documentation processes.
