TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister of the Interior Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) claimed on Thursday (Feb. 6) that some agencies might be recruiting Taiwanese citizens for tours in China, later offering ID applications for a fee. Authorities are reportedly probing whether this is merely a commercial activity or involves Chinese influence operations.
Speaking at a Ministry of the Interior (內政部) press conference, Liu revealed that the ministry is collaborating with relevant agencies to verify these claims. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) and national security units are assisting in the investigation. Liu also mentioned that authorities have already interviewed more than 30 individuals to ascertain if they possess Chinese IDs. She noted the discovery of public relations firms across northern, central, and southern Taiwan potentially involved in these activities.
She revealed a day earlier that the investigation currently targets three to five companies to determine any violations of the " Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area" (兩岸人民關係條例).
