TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Northern Taiwan experienced a marked temperature surge on Monday (April 7), with the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reporting highs between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius (80.6 to 84.2°F) across western regions and 24 to 26 degrees Celsius (75.2 to 78.8°F) in eastern areas. The shift from easterly to southeasterly winds has triggered intermittent rainfall throughout eastern Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula, and mountainous sections of the western region, according to weather officials.
The outlying island of Penghu (澎湖) saw partly cloudy conditions with temperatures spanning from 21 to 24 degrees Celsius (69.8 to 75.2°F), CWA meteorologists noted. Kinmen (金門), situated closer to mainland China, is forecast to experience variable cloudiness interspersed with sunshine and a wider temperature range of 15 to 26 degrees Celsius (59.0 to 78.8°F). Further north, Matsu (馬祖) recorded cooler temperatures between 14 and 19 degrees Celsius (57.2 to 66.2°F) under similar partly cloudy skies.
Weather officials emphasized that powerful northeastern winds continue to impact several regions, particularly Taoyuan (桃園), the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春), Orchid Island (蘭嶼), Green Island (綠島), and Penghu. These areas experienced sustained winds exceeding level 6 with gusts surpassing level 8 on the Beaufort scale. The CWA issued advisories urging residents and visitors to exercise caution when outdoors, especially in coastal and elevated locations where wind effects are most pronounced.
Beyond the temperature and precipitation patterns, Taiwan's Ministry of Environment (MOE, 環境部) warned of deteriorating air quality across western regions. Their forecast attributed poor pollution dispersion to returning high-pressure systems, resulting in accumulated pollutants and elevated afternoon ozone concentrations. While Hsinchu-Miaoli (竹苗), Yilan (宜蘭), and Hualien-Taitung (花東) maintained "moderate" air quality readings, conditions in northern and central Taiwan, Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan, and Kaohsiung-Pingtung areas registered at the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" level. The outlying islands of Matsu, Kinmen, and Penghu also experienced similar concerning air quality conditions.
