TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan has activated emergency relief mechanisms in response to the catastrophic earthquake that has ravaged Myanmar, leaving more than 3,000 people dead in its wake. The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC, 僑委會), a government agency overseeing Taiwan's international community relations, will establish a dedicated donation account on April 8 to channel aid to the affected regions. Minister Hsu Chia-ching (徐佳青) unveiled the humanitarian initiative on Wednesday, emphasizing plans to collaborate with Taiwanese business networks and educational institutions abroad to deliver crucial supplies to survivors struggling amid the destruction.

During a press conference held on Wednesday (April 2), Minister Hsu announced that an initial shipment of emergency supplies has successfully arrived in the earthquake-stricken region. The relief effort represents a coordinated response from Taiwan's private sector, with Taiwanese businesses providing financial backing, purchasing necessary items, and arranging transportation logistics. Beginning Thursday, the council's network of overseas educational institutions will transition into strategic distribution centers, leveraging their established presence in the region to facilitate the efficient delivery of aid to affected communities.

The dire conditions on the ground were underscored by Yang You-chuan (楊友全), who serves as president of the "Myanmar Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce." He identified critical shortages of essential survival equipment, including flashlights, temporary shelter materials, and blankets needed to protect displaced survivors from the elements. Yang confirmed that preparations for a second, larger relief shipment are already underway, with delivery anticipated in approximately three days. Meanwhile, the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce has expanded the humanitarian response to an international scale, launching a global fundraising campaign specifically targeting relief for Myanmar's earthquake victims.

The relief operation faces significant logistical hurdles due to Myanmar's current political landscape under military rule, with Minister Hsu acknowledging that both monetary transfers and physical aid deliveries are subject to strict governmental oversight. Despite China Airlines offering complimentary cargo services for humanitarian purposes, shipments have encountered bureaucratic obstacles at Myanmar's customs checkpoints. The scale of the humanitarian crisis continues to grow, with Myanmar's military leader Min Aung Hlaing (敏昂萊) announcing on Tuesday that the confirmed death count had reached 2,719, though officials expect the final toll to surpass 3,000 victims. Beyond the mounting fatalities, the earthquake has left 4,521 people injured and 441 individuals still unaccounted for in the affected regions.
