TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's representative to Israel, Li Ya-ping (李雅萍), recently met with Mayor Eli Lankri (蘭克里) of the southern Israeli coastal city of Eilat (埃拉特) to forge new partnerships in sustainable development, according to the Central News Agency (CNA, 中央社). The diplomatic exchange, which was announced on Tuesday (March 25), centered on potential collaborations in environmental sustainability, tourism recovery, renewable energy initiatives, and smart city technologies. Their discussions highlighted growing bilateral ties between Taiwan and Israel's regional centers beyond traditional diplomatic channels.
During the meeting, Li underscored Taiwan's commitment to strengthening municipal-level diplomatic relations with Israel, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as carbon reduction strategies and emergency shelter systems. The representative pointed to these collaborative efforts as evidence of Taiwan's continued engagement in global affairs despite its limited formal diplomatic recognition. Li's visit to Eilat represents Taiwan's pragmatic approach to international cooperation through specialized technical and policy exchanges at the local government level.
The envoy highlighted the robust foundation for bilateral cooperation, noting that Taiwan and Israel have established 34 formal agreements spanning economic development, cultural exchange, tourism promotion, technological innovation, and environmental initiatives. Li explained how Taiwan has strategically expanded its city-to-city diplomatic outreach through international platforms including the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) and the Smart City Summit & Expo. These mechanisms have allowed Taiwan to share expertise and build relationships despite geopolitical constraints on traditional diplomatic channels.
For his part, Mayor Lankri expressed optimism about the recovery of Eilat's vital tourism sector, which has weathered significant disruptions from both the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing regional conflicts. The mayor extended a warm invitation to Taiwanese visitors, highlighting Eilat's appealing climate, spectacular Red Sea coral ecosystems, and diverse marine recreational opportunities. Tourism represents a crucial economic pillar for the coastal city, which has been working to rebuild visitor confidence amid regional security concerns.
Lankri also shared insights from Eilat's humanitarian response during recent conflicts, noting that in October 2023, the city provided shelter to more than 60,000 displaced individuals affected by hostilities with Hamas and Hezbollah. The mayor described how local authorities rapidly established specialized trauma care facilities to address the psychological impacts of the conflict. This experience in crisis management and emergency response represents another potential area for knowledge exchange between Taiwan and Eilat, particularly given Taiwan's own advanced disaster preparedness systems.
