TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's tech industry showcased cutting-edge 5G and AI innovations at this year's Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE, 智慧城市展), highlighting the nation's growing prominence in urban technology solutions and digital transformation. The expo featured interactive demonstrations from industry leaders like Chunghwa Telecom, Delta Electronics, and Hon Hai/Foxconn (鴻海), showcasing applications ranging from intelligent traffic management to virtual power plants and electric transportation.
"AI is one of the major topics this year for the Smart City Expo," said Vincent C. Chen, vice president of the International Business Group at Chunghwa Telecom. "One of the major highlights, we use AI into smart traffic, smart transportation solutions. For example, all the current camera, CCTV camera now is changed to AI based in camera." Chen explained that these AI-powered cameras can dynamically detect road conditions, providing more efficient traffic prediction and signal control systems for city governments.
Energy Innovation and Healthcare Solutions
Delta Electronics also demonstrated how home energy storage systems can contribute to Taiwan's power grid resilience through innovative virtual power plant technology. "If TaiPower needs electricity, home energy storage systems or electric bus batteries can send power back to the grid through Delta's charging stations," explained James Chu, project manager at Delta Electronics. "A virtual power plant involves storing electricity among the public, allowing any extra power from businesses or households to be fed back into the grid."
In the healthcare sector, the Holistic Integrated Care Communication and Coordination Platform presented an application designed specifically for medical and long-term care professionals. "We have developed an app for the medical and long-term care field, designed as a work-oriented version of LINE," said Huang Hsiu-yeh from the platform. "Users can create calendars to share schedules easily. The app also offers multilingual support to accommodate many foreign caregivers in the industry."
Transportation and Security Advancements
Hon Hai/Foxconn (鴻海) showcased its progress in electric transportation with its Model T e-bus, which is already operating on Taiwan's roads. "We have already taken more than 200 e-buses operating on Taiwan roads," said James Chen of Hon Hai/Foxconn. "In the future, we will implement the 5G and the AI systems inside and to become a smart city transportation."
Taiwan Secom demonstrated how drone technology is enhancing workplace safety through real-time monitoring and AI analysis. "Drones can monitor worksites in real time, using backend image analysis to ensure workers wear safety helmets and vests properly," said Peter Chou, project manager at Taiwan Secom. "They can also detect fires and smoke to help prevent disasters."
Tatung Company's subsidiary tsti presented an AI solution designed for business applications across various sectors. "We provide a total solution, from the hardware infrastructure to data analyzing and then to the user interface," explained Greg Liu, project manager at tsti. "ibo.ai is a very flexible AI agent for all kinds of industries. So, you provide a backstage for all kinds of marketing departments, for sales departments, for all kinds of usage."
The Smart City Expo serves as a platform for collaboration between Taiwanese companies and international partners, reinforcing Taiwan's position as a global leader in urban technology solutions and smart city development.
