TAIPEI (TVBS News)—Tainan City (台南市) is launching its first wave of social housing applications, Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) announced on Friday (March 14). Starting Monday, residents can apply for units located in the desirable Yongkang (永康區) and Rende (仁德區) districts, marking a significant milestone in the city's efforts to expand access to affordable living. The initiative aims to address the growing need for affordable housing options in the city.
Mayor Huang highlighted the project's cost-effectiveness, explaining that the use of volume awards for developers resulted in substantial savings of NT$2.4 billion for the city treasury. This innovative approach allowed the city to maximize its investment and provide a greater number of affordable housing units. He emphasized that these savings did not compromise the quality of the housing.
Huang added that the new social housing units boast high-quality construction materials and are strategically located near essential amenities such as schools, hospitals, and parks. This prime location enhances the residents' quality of life by providing convenient access to essential services and recreational areas. The thoughtful planning aims to create a thriving and supportive community.
Bureau of Urban Development (都發局) Director General Lin Lung-chuan (林榮川) provided further details, stating that the units offer a range of options, from one to three bedrooms, all incorporating universal design principles. Rental prices will vary depending on the unit size and the applicant's financial situation. With 556 units available this year and an anticipated total of 2,154 units by next year, the project seeks to cater to a wide range of housing needs.
