TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is grappling with a sharp surge in norovirus cases, with a leading gastroenterologist reporting on Wednesday (Feb. 26) that 70-80% of recent patients are also battling acute gastroenteritis. The specialist underscored critical symptom management strategies to curb the virus’s rapid spread and reduce its debilitating effects.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 疾管署) reported Tuesday that diarrhea-related outpatient visits reached 304,418 from Feb. 16-22, marking a five-year high for the same period. Gastroenterologist Ching Chang (張靖) himself contracted the virus, experiencing symptoms like nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever.
Norovirus, known for its strong transmissibility and low infectious dose, remains the predominant pathogen. The outbreak coincides with the school season, exacerbating its spread in educational settings. Chang advised several measures to alleviate symptoms, including replenishing fluids and electrolytes with diluted sports drinks, resting the digestive system by fasting when experiencing nausea or diarrhea, and consuming small, bland meals as symptoms improve.
Chang also stressed the importance of frequent handwashing and using separate utensils to prevent household transmission. He further urged those with severe symptoms to seek medical treatment.
