TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) addressed the issue of adjusting national holidays on Tuesday (Feb. 25), emphasizing the importance of adopting a consistent national approach to minimize societal costs and changes. He encouraged open, rational public discussions on the matter.
During a legislative session earlier that day, Cho responded to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Rosalia Wu's (吳思瑤) inquiry. He explained that Taiwan's current national holidays total 115 or 116 days annually, aligning with previous Legislative Yuan resolutions.
Cho acknowledged public calls for additional holidays but cautioned that any increase would exceed the existing resolutions. He stressed that any new holidays should hold significant meaning for the public and the nation.
Addressing the recent discourse on reinstating the seven canceled national holidays, Cho clarified that this issue no longer exists. He noted that the implementation of a two-day weekend led to the cancellation of the seven-day holiday, with 95% of the public now enjoying two days off weekly. Wu pressed for clarity on whether the government plans to amend the law or use administrative orders.
