TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) stated on Thursday (Feb. 13) that it has promptly informed the Macau government and dispatched representatives to visit and comfort those from the region who were injured by a gas explosion in Taichung.
The explosion rocked the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi (新光三越) department store in Taichung on Thursday, leaving four dead and injuring 30 others. Among the victims, a Macau family of seven suffered tragic losses, with the grandparents killed and their young granddaughter critically injured and intubated.
The explosion disrupted the family's plans to return home on Friday. The blast also injured other family members, including the girl's parents, uncle, and great-grandmother.
Family members from Macau will fly to Taiwan on Friday to assist with immigration, medical, and visa extension matters. The incident underscores the unexpected nature of such tragedies and the immediate need for cross-border cooperation in crisis situations.
