TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — A devastating gas explosion at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Zhonggang Store (台中新光三越中港店) in Taichung (台中) on Thursday (Feb. 13) resulted in the tragic loss of four lives and injuring 20 others. Wu Xin-yang (吳昕陽), general manager of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi (新光三越), has pledged to take full responsibility for the incident.
Wu announced that the initial phase of compensation for the injured will commence shortly, with further details to be provided in due course. The explosion caused significant damage to nearby floor pipelines, and investigations are underway to ascertain the precise cause.
The Taichung City Government's Fire Bureau (台中市消防局) suspects that renovation work in the 12th-floor food court may have triggered the explosion, which impacted at least three floors. Police and firefighters are diligently conducting rescue operations amid the debris as they work to ensure the safety of all individuals affected.
