TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Transportation (交通部) announced on Wednesday (Feb. 12) that Taiwan's High-Speed Rail (台灣高鐵) reached a record transportation ridership of 78.25 million in 2024, marking a 7% increase from 2023. This milestone reflects the highest annual ridership in its 18-year operation, underscoring the growing reliance on this mode of transportation.
Zuoying Station (左營站) experienced significant growth, with over 10 million passengers entering and exiting in 2024 for the first time. It ranks third in transportation ridership after Taipei Station (台北站) and Taichung Station (台中站). Taipei Station remains the busiest, with 16.39 million entries and 16.95 million exits, while Taichung Station recorded 13.23 million entries and exits.
Nangang Station (南港站) led in growth rate, with a 12.9% increase in entries and a 10.5% rise in exits. Tainan Station (台南站) also showed notable increases, with entries up by 10.3% and exits by 10.2% compared to 2023. Meanwhile, Changhua Station (彰化站) and Miaoli Station (苗栗站) saw 7% and 8% growth, respectively, in both entries and exits.
Yunlin Station (雲林站) reported a 9% rise in passenger volume, highlighting the overall upward trend in rail usage. The Ministry's latest figures suggest a robust demand for high-speed rail travel, possibly prompting further expansions or enhancements to accommodate the increasing passenger numbers.
