TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC, 交通部) Freeway Bureau (高速公路局) reported on Wednesday (Feb. 12) that Type A1 accidents (with fatalities within 24 hours of the accident) claimed 28 lives last year, with rear-end collisions accounting for 23 of the 70 incidents.
These fatalities made up 35% of the total deaths from A1 accidents, the Freeway Bureau highlighted, emphasizing the dangers of distracted driving and failure to maintain a safe distance on national highways.
Ahead of the 228 Peace Memorial Day holiday, the Freeway Bureau predicts heavy traffic as travelers hit the roads. The bureau urged drivers to stay focused, adhere to speed limits, and avoid distractions, fatigue, and sudden braking.
In a press release, the bureau suggested that those traveling between Hsinchu and Tainan consider using Provincial Highway 61 to bypass congestion on national highways.
