GUATEMALA CITY (TVBS News) — Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo reaffirmed his government's commitment to deepening cooperation with Taiwan on Wednesday (Feb. 5). He emphasized that "we maintain our diplomatic relationship with Taiwan" and expressed hope to advance collaboration in terms of economics and investment.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio underscored the importance of strengthening diplomatic ties among the U.S., Guatemala, and Taiwan during a joint press conference in Guatemala City. Rubio praised Taiwan as "another democracy" and expressed a desire to expand cooperation beyond diplomacy into economic, investment, and business sectors.
Rubio, speaking in Spanish and English, highlighted Guatemala's steadfastness in maintaining its diplomatic relations with Taiwan despite international pressures. He commended Guatemala's recognition of Taiwan, emphasizing that such alliances could pave the way for more comprehensive collaborations.
Rubio held a working dinner with President Arevalo last night to discuss immigration, drug trafficking, the China threat, and Taiwan relations. He met with Guatemala's vice president and several cabinet officials to address immigration and security issues on Wednesday morning local time.
