TAIPEI (TVBS News)—Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (台北捷運公司) announced on Wednesday (Feb. 4) that hanging bicycles from MRT handrails poses a safety risk and could result in fines up to NT$7,500. The company advised passengers to report such incidents to station staff for resolution.
A video uploaded to the social media platform Threads showed several bicycles hanging from handrails, swaying with the train's movement. A nearby passenger wearing a bicycle helmet sat on the floor, absorbed in their phone.
This video sparked heated discussions online. Many social media users criticized the cyclists' actions, stating that cyclists should hold onto their bikes while on the MRT and labeling the behavior a violation.
The company responded via text message, stating they could refuse transport if such actions damaged MRT equipment. They warned that those who ignore warnings and compromise other's safety could face fines ranging from NT$1,500 to NT$7,500 under the "Mass Rapid Transit Act" (大眾捷運法).
According to the company's regulations, bicycles are allowed during specific hours on weekdays and all day on weekends, and strict guidelines must be adhered to. Certain stations, including Tamsui Station (淡水), Taipei Main Station (台北車站), and Zhongxiao Fuxing Station (忠孝復興), among others, prohibit bicycle access entirely.
