TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) announced Wednesday (Jan. 15) that it has submitted a proposal to adjust the salaries of volunteer soldiers and combat units to the Executive Yuan (行政院) for review. The ministry aims to address the loss of volunteer military personnel by enhancing pay incentives once the details receive approval.
During a routine press conference, an official from the MND, Huang Ming-chun (黃銘君), stated the ministry is implementing humane management measures, such as allowing soldiers to travel abroad freely and eliminating leave reporting requirements. Huang added that the ministry is considering easing recruitment restrictions, including permitting tattooed individuals to apply, drawing from international recruitment practices.
Major General Kao Chih-hsiung (高志雄) from the Department of Resource Planning expressed optimism that the salary adjustments will boost volunteer recruitment and retention. He confirmed the proposal's submission to the Executive Yuan, noting that details will be announced post-approval. Meanwhile, Major General Cheng Chia-chi (成家麒) highlighted the nationality restrictions for public office due to national loyalty obligations.
The media also questioned a proposal by the Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) caucus to cut the military equipment and facilities budget by 3%. Major General Hsin Yi-tsung (辛宜聰) from the ministry's Comptroller Bureau reported a budget allocation exceeding NT$170.1 billion for critical military procurements, including new tanks, Harpoon missiles, and the MQ-9B high-altitude drone system.
