TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of the Interior Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) unveiled on Monday (Jan. 13) that a ministry investigation found fewer than 10 Taiwanese citizens with Chinese identification cards. She urged the public to report any illegal activities to the ministry, addressing concerns raised on social media about Taiwanese allegedly holding these cards.
A YouTuber, Pa Chiung (八炯), claimed in a video that 200,000 Taiwanese hold Chinese ID cards. He also claimed that China has five locations in New Taipei and Taichung where Taiwanese can apply for Chinese IDs. The Investigation Bureau (調查局) confirmed last Wednesday some citizens possess Chinese ID cards or household registration books and will refer the matter for further investigation.
The bureau emphasized that Taiwanese citizens with household registration in China or holding a People's Republic of China passport or resident ID card could face the cancellation of their household registration in Taiwan. This cancellation would result in the loss of voting rights, recall rights, and other benefits tied to Taiwanese residency, including health insurance and long-term care eligibility.
Liu, speaking before a Legislative Yuan committee meeting, reiterated that fewer than 10 people hold Chinese ID cards and urged citizens to report any illegal activities in Taiwan. Regarding Pa Chiung's claim of Chinese infiltration through ID application centers, Liu stated that authorities would investigate any potential legal violations.
