TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Labor (勞動部) released survey results on migrant workers for 2024 on Monday (Jan. 6), revealing key insights into their wages and working conditions in Taiwan's manufacturing and construction sectors. The survey found that these workers' average monthly regular salary and overtime pay reached NT$33,000 in June, marking an increase of NT$2,000 from the previous year.
The survey highlighted a decrease in working hours for migrant workers in these sectors, with June's total at 179.1 hours, 13.3 hours less than the previous year. Regular working hours were 152.2, and overtime was 26.9 hours. In contrast, family caregivers earned an average monthly salary of NT$24,000 in June, including NT$21,000 in regular wages and NT$3,000 in overtime, attributed mainly to an extra Sunday that month.
The report also noted that 39.7% of employers in business units faced challenges when employing migrant workers, primarily due to language barriers and communication difficulties. Among family employers, 34.7% encountered issues, citing language problems and workers' tendencies to use mobile phones and chat frequently.
Also, 89% of family employers had alternative care plans during caregivers' leave, with 45% willing to apply for subsidies for these arrangements. Economic burdens led many family employers to discontinue hiring caregivers, followed by worker scheduling conflicts. These findings underscore the complexities of employing migrant workers in Taiwan and highlight areas needing attention for improved integration and support.
