TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) reaffirmed its stance against corruption on Thursday (Jan. 2), emphasizing the importance of respecting judicial independence. This statement came amid the ongoing legal proceedings involving Former Taipei Mayor and Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) Chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), who faced another detention order Thursday evening from the Taipei District Court (台北地方法院).
The TPP has called on President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to stop using the judiciary as a political weapon against adversaries. In response, DPP Spokesperson Wu Cheng (吳崢) held a press conference, stressing that judicial independence is the cornerstone of a democratic society, and the judicial system does not belong to any party or individual.
Wu Cheng highlighted the judicial processes in Ko's case, which included the Taipei District Court's bail ruling, the prosecutor's appeal, and the Taiwan High Court's (台灣高等法院) decision to remand for further adjudication. He criticized the TPP for undermining the judiciary when court decisions are unfavorable, describing such actions as a double standard and overly politicized interpretation.
Wu Cheng reiterated the DPP's commitment to addressing corruption without bias and urged the TPP to respect the independent operation of the judicial branch.
