TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Finance Committee (財政委員會) under the Legislative Yuan (立法院) passed a resolution on Thursday (Jan. 2) urging the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC, 金融監督管理委員會) to allocate resources to enhance public financial literacy through inter-ministerial cooperation. The decision aims to tackle the growing issue of investment fraud in Taiwan by equipping citizens with better financial knowledge.
Members of the Finance Committee reviewed the 2025 central government budget proposal. They unanimously approved proposals by Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) Legislator Huang Shan-shan (黃珊珊) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Kuo Kuo-wen (郭國文). These proposals emphasize the need to combat investment fraud by increasing financial literacy among the public.
Huang highlighted a 2022 survey by the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance (金融研訓院), which found that nearly 40% of the younger generation are close to financial illiteracy, contributing to the rampant investment fraud. Huang also noted several recent national security leaks linked to poor financial management by military personnel.
Huang also called on the FSC to conduct a financial literacy survey and enhancement plan for students and submit a written report to the Finance Committee. Kuo proposed integrating financial knowledge into compulsory education curricula, strengthening public financial literacy training, and requesting a written report to the committee.
