TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Fair Trade Commission (公平會) announced on Monday (Dec. 23) that it has extended the review of the merger between Uber Eats and foodpanda in Taiwan. The decision hinges on the need for senior executives from the companies' U.S. and German headquarters to present their opinions in Taiwan. This delay comes after the companies' top brass requested a joint meeting, compressing the timeline for deliberation.
Chairperson Lee Mei (李鎂) has pledged to issue a ruling before her term ends on Jan. 31, ahead of the statutory deadline of March 21. Lee emphasized that the commission will handle the case impartially according to the law, considering feedback from consumers, delivery workers, restaurant owners, and legislators. The commission must reach a decision within 30 days of filing, with a possible extension to 90 days if necessary.
Lin Ching-tang (林慶堂), the head of the Department of Service Industry Competition, clarified that the executives from both delivery platforms will focus on "market definition" in their presentations. The companies argue that the food delivery market is diverse and should not be defined solely by delivery service providers. They claim the merger will benefit the overall economy positively.
On Dec. 17, Uber Eats and foodpanda delivered their final arguments against opposition from various sectors in Taiwan. As the Fair Trade Commission moves forward with its review, stakeholders await a decision that could reshape the food delivery landscape in the country.
