TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Egg Merchants Association (台北市蛋商業同業公會) reported Monday (Dec. 23) that Taiwan's egg production reached a daily output of 127,000 cartons, each containing 200 eggs. This marks the highest production in recent years. Since late September, the daily output has surged from 125,000 cartons, causing an oversupply.
The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) revealed plans to halt the establishment of new farms in Chiayi County next year, coordinating with local governments to implement total production control. Lin Tien-lai (林天來), chairman of the Taipei City Egg Merchants Association, warned that local governments still issue new farm permits, potentially pushing daily production to over 130,000 cartons by February or March 2025.
Egg prices have declined following multiple pricing disputes. Currently, farm gate prices stand at NT$24.5 per catty, wholesale prices at NT$34, and retail prices at approximately NT$44 per carton. Department of Animal Husbandry Deputy Director Lee Yi-chien (李宜謙) urged local governments to enforce total production control to prevent the proliferation of egg farms. The number of egg farms increased from 1,700-1,800 five years ago to 2,100-2,200 today.
Chiayi County has legislated to stop issuing new farm permits next year, with Changhua County implementing similar measures. The Department of Animal Husbandry noted that the weekly number of breeder hens has decreased from 600,000-700,000 in June and July to 300,000.
