TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Danjiang Bridge (淡江大橋), will become a new landmark in Taiwan upon its scheduled completion by the end of 2025. The head of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC, 交通部) announced on Wednesday (Dec. 11) that the bridge is expected to attract over 20,000 tourists on holidays, significantly boosting local businesses.
Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱), inspected the construction site and emphasized the bridge's significance as a world-class infrastructure project and one of Taiwan's most crucial public works. He noted that it will alleviate traffic congestion between Tamsui (淡水) and Danhai New Town (淡海新市鎮), particularly easing the current bottlenecks at Guandu Bridge (關渡大橋).
The bridge aims to enhance tourism in Tamsui, with plans to emulate iconic structures like Australia's Sydney Harbour Bridge and the U.S.'s Golden Gate Bridge by hosting New Year's Eve fireworks. Minister Chen expects the bridge to draw between 24,000 and 25,000 visitors to Tamsui on holidays and plans to establish a visitor center at the management hub, offering souvenirs and featuring pedestrian and bicycle paths.
Zheng Min-chung (鄭閔中), head of the Third Engineering Office of the Northern Region, New Construction Branch Office (公路局北區公路新建工程分局第三工務段), highlighted the bridge's unique design. It is the nation's first bridge designed through an international competition, crafted by renowned architect Zaha Hadid. He shared that the Danjiang Bridge, with a main span of 450 meters, will be the world's largest single-tower asymmetric cable-stayed bridge and mark Hadid's final masterpiece.
