PENGHU (TVBS News) — A massive blaze at the Hongluo Landfill (紅羅垃圾衛生掩埋場) in Penghu (澎湖) continues to burn as of Tuesday (Dec. 10) at 7 a.m., after raging for over 20 hours and impacting garbage collection in Magong (馬公) and Huxi (湖西) areas.
The Penghu County Government Fire Bureau (澎湖縣消防局) reported receiving the fire alert at 10:52 a.m. on Monday. They dispatched 24 vehicles and 53 personnel to the scene, discovering two separate fires. The northeast monsoon and abundant waste material exacerbated the flames and caused explosions.
Firefighters faced equipment challenges when two excavators malfunctioned, forcing them to adopt perimeter protection strategies to prevent the fire from spreading further. Despite a continuous effort with 20-person shifts working four-hour rotations overnight, the fire has yet to be contained, leaving four garbage trucks, one recycling vehicle, three skid-steer loaders, and one excavator destroyed.
Environmental Protection Bureau of Penghu County (澎湖縣政府環境保護局) Director Yang Shu-shun (楊書舜) cut short a planned trip to Jeju Island, South Korea, to oversee the response efforts in Penghu. Yang aims to resume waste processing operations by the end of the day and has coordinated additional garbage truck support from the Huxi Township Office (湖西鄉公所).
