TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) welcomed the triumphant national baseball team at the Presidential Office on Tuesday (Nov. 26), donning a "Taiwan" hoodie to showcase his support. Lai praised the team for its historic victory in the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Premier12, highlighting the win as a unifying moment for the nation.
Speaking at the event, the president emphasized that the world championship will become a shared memory for Taiwanese people, stressing the bravery of Taiwan. Lai remarked that as long as Taiwan gives its all and fights courageously, nothing is impossible.
A few moments earlier, the streets of Taipei buzzed with excitement as fans cheered the team along the route to the grand reception at the Presidential Office. The military honor guard formed a symbolic arch of swords to welcome the returning heroes.
Before departing for the competition, Team Taiwan's captain, Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲), expressed his desire to make Taiwan proud. Head Coach Ceng Hao-ju (曾豪駒) also remarked, "We are striving for our own history and story."
Lai reflected on past near victories, noting that without them, "there would be no heroes of Taiwan today." He expressed confidence in Taiwan's national sport, describing it as an embodiment of perseverance and excellence. President Lai urged everyone to attend next season's games, supporting Taiwanese baseball. He called for unity through sports and strengthening Taiwan with baseball.
