TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Director Ang Lee (李安) received the Praemium Imperiale award for film on Monday (Nov. 18) in Japan, marking a significant achievement as the first Taiwanese recipient. Lee expressed pride and deep gratitude for this recognition, highlighting the honor of representing Taiwan in this prestigious realm.

Surprised by the accolade, Lee praised Japanese cinema's profound impact on global culture, particularly on Asian filmmakers, including himself. He emphasized the cinematic experience's sacred nature, stating that the cinema is like a temple and film is a ritual for him. We reflect on life through the ritual and hope to touch the truth.

Lee's illustrious career includes winning two Oscars for Best Director with "Brokeback Mountain" (斷背山) and "Life of Pi" (少年PI的奇幻漂流). His achievements have solidified his status as a visionary in the film industry. Alongside Lee, other Praemium Imperiale laureates include French artist Sophie Calle, Colombian artist Doris Salcedo, Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, and Portuguese/Swiss pianist Maria João Pires.

This recognition not only honors Lee's contributions to cinema but also underscores the global influence of Asian filmmakers. As Lee continues to inspire through his storytelling, the award highlights the cultural exchanges that enrich the arts worldwide.
