TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Young professionals are reshaping workplace norms by emphasizing work-life balance, marking a departure from traditional practices. Lin Shu-yu (林書伃), a senior human resources manager at a local job bank, notes a growing trend among the youth to leave work on time, reflecting this shift.
Hung Hsueh-chen (洪雪珍), a workplace expert, underscores the significance of clearly defined work hours, asserting that prolonged hours do not boost productivity. Canadian productivity expert Chris Bailey, in his 2023 book "How to Calm Your Mind: Finding Presence and Productivity in Anxious Times," argues that a calm mindset enhances productivity. He highlights that anxiety can decrease work efficiency by 16.5%, necessitating an additional 1 hour and 19 minutes of overtime to complete tasks.
Hung also highlights young workers' familiarity with the Labor Standards Act (勞動基準法), warning companies of the need to compensate for actual overtime to prevent complaints and recruitment issues. This new generation, attuned to personal life and legal standards, challenges outdated norms like unpaid overtime.
As these shifts occur, businesses might need to adapt, fostering healthier workplaces that balance life and work. This evolution could spark broader discussions on sustainable work environments and employee well-being.
