TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Severe flooding hit Yilan County (宜蘭縣) on Tuesday (Nov. 12), affecting hundreds of households. Residents began cleanup efforts on Wednesday, expressing shock at the intensity of the rainfall. Yilan's Su'ao Township (蘇澳鎮) office deployed its entire sanitation team to assist in debris removal, marking the worst disaster since Typhoon Megi (梅姬颱風) in 2010.
Huang Tien-chang (黃殿璋), the chief of Nanxing Village (南興里), reported that the rain intensified in the eastern coastline Nanfang'ao (南方澳) starting at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The drainage system failed to cope, leading to flooding in several alleys, with water levels reaching 30 centimeters. Floodwaters began receding only after 5 p.m.
Huang highlighted this event as the most severe since the century-old flood caused by Typhoon Megi, with over 100 households in Nanxing Village affected. The sudden rainfall overwhelmed the drainage system, compounded by the small diameter of the Nanfang'ao sewer outlet. Many residents suffered damage to appliances, furnishings, and vehicles.
Locals are urging the Su'ao Township Office to secure post-disaster relief for affected households. This call to action underscores the need for improved infrastructure to prevent future occurrences.
