TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Military officials confirmed on Monday (Nov. 4) that Taiwan received its first batch of HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems in October.

The Army's 58th Artillery Command is currently conducting training on these systems, according to reports. Taiwan initially purchased 11 HIMARS systems from the U.S. and later increased the order to 29 units by acquiring an additional 18 systems instead of the M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzers.

The U.S. recently detailed the arms sale to Taiwan, which includes 64 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) with a range of up to 300 kilometers.

The Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) stated in its 2023 defense report that after receiving the first 11 systems, deployment will prioritize western Taiwan. New multiple-launch rocket battalions will be established in the north, central, and southern regions, as well as Penghu.

To ensure proper operation and maintenance, Taiwan sent 30 military personnel to the U.S. for HIMARS training, as outlined in the 2024 defense budget. This training occurred from February to October, and the personnel have since returned to Taiwan.

The deployment of these advanced systems marks a significant enhancement in Taiwan's defense capabilities, reflecting ongoing efforts to bolster its military readiness amid regional tensions.
