TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) announced on Tuesday (Oct. 29) that the United States is finalizing a contract with manufacturers for the sale of attack drones to Taiwan, including 685 anti-personnel and 291 anti-armor models. This development marks a significant step in bolstering Taiwan's defense capabilities amid regional tensions.
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (國防安全合作署) revealed on June 18 that the State Department approved Taiwan's request to purchase 720 Switchblade 300 loitering munition systems and related equipment, valued at approximately US$60.2 million. According to Taiwan's 2025 defense budget, the MND plans to procure these drones as part of its strategic military enhancements.
On Oct. 15, the Government e-Procurement System published two tender announcements for these systems, with the anti-personnel and anti-armor drones awarded at NT$1.74 billion and NT$3.53 billion, respectively. At a routine press conference, the MND confirmed it signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) in September, a crucial step before the official contract signing.
Major General Wen Yu-hen (翁予恒) of the MND's Force Planning Section emphasized that the actual transaction will proceed according to plan following the contract signing. This acquisition underscores Taiwan's commitment to strengthening its military infrastructure and ensuring readiness in the face of evolving security challenges.
