TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The National Development Council (NDC, 國發會) on Thursday (Oct. 17) released a population projection report predicting Taiwan's total population will decrease from 23.4 million in 2024 to 14.97 million in 2070, marking a reduction of 8.44 million people.

The report highlights Taiwan's impending transition into a "super-aged society" by 2025, with over 20% of its population aged 65 and above, mirroring trends in countries like Japan, Germany, and France.

Experts anticipate the end of Taiwan's "demographic dividend" by 2028 when the working-age population (ages 15-64) will comprise less than two-thirds of the total population. The council attributes this shift to increased life expectancy and declining birth rates, with projections showing the proportion of those aged 65 and older rising from 19.2% in 2024 to 46.5% by 2070.

The NDC warns that population decline and aging will have profound economic and social implications. However, the council also sees this demographic shift as an opportunity to drive industrial upgrades and transformation.

As Taiwan approaches these demographic milestones, policymakers and industry leaders must strategize to harness potential opportunities while addressing the challenges posed by an aging population.
