TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) addressed the city's declining population in a meeting on Wednesday (Sept. 18), stressing that the issue's complexity requires expert discussions and recommendations.
After a brief population increase to over 2.5 million last May, the city peaked at 2,511,886 residents by year's end. However, numbers have declined, potentially dropping below 2.5 million by October.
The mayor led the population policy committee meeting, acknowledging the challenges of low birth rates and an aging population. He emphasized continuous discussions and the need for responsive measures.
Chiang highlighted that the meeting focused on creating a child-friendly workplace and senior-friendly policies. He stressed the importance of attracting young people to live and work in Taipei, aiming to make the city more livable.
