TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taichung City Police Department (台中市警察局) announced on Wednesday (Oct. 16) plans to implement tech-assisted traffic enforcement at the intersection of Sanmin Road (三民路) and Yucai North Rd (育才北路) by Dec. 1.
This initiative aims to address pedestrian safety in a bustling area near Yizhong commercial district and several educational institutions and will target vehicles that do not stop for pedestrians.
Police statistics revealed 46 traffic accidents occurred at this intersection last year, injuring 37 people. To promote pedestrian-friendly policies, the department will install LED warning signs to urge vehicles to slow down and yield. The public awareness campaign will run from now until Nov. 30, educating drivers on compliance.
The enforcement system will operate 24/7, capturing photos of violations when vehicles fail to yield at crosswalks. Officers will review images to determine infractions. According to police, a violation occurs if a vehicle is within 3 meters of a pedestrian's path or if its front crosses the line.
Motorcycles face a fine of NT$1,200, while cars incur a NT$6,000 penalty, along with three demerit points and a mandatory three-hour safety course. Severe penalties apply if accidents result in injury or death, with fines ranging from NT$7,200 to NT$36,000 and possible license suspension or revocation.
The Taichung City Police Department's initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing pedestrian safety and fostering a culture of yielding. As the enforcement date approaches, the department urges drivers to adapt to these changes for a safer community.
