TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's labor minister on Wednesday (Oct. 16) announced that the Ministry of Labor (MOL, 勞動部) has formally opposed the merger between Uber Eats Taiwan and foodpanda by sending a letter to the Fair Trade Commission (公平會) to express their concerns.
As the merger awaits regulatory approval after Uber Eats announced on May 14 its plan to acquire foodpanda's delivery operations in Taiwan, legislators raised questions about the merger's impact on delivery workers' rights during a meeting attended by Ho Pei-shan (何佩珊).
Minister Ho stated her opposition to the merger and confirmed that the MOL has officially communicated its stance to the commission, and emphasized that the commission should notify the ministry before any discussions on the merger.
When asked about the possibility of establishing a special law for delivery workers, Ho said that the issue is still under discussion at the Executive Yuan and requires careful deliberation.
