TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) emphasized on Tuesday (Oct. 15) the significance of the newly inaugurated Academia Sinica (中央研究院) South Campus in Tainan, highlighting its role in promoting balanced development between northern and southern Taiwan.
The opening ceremony drew prominent figures, including Academia Sinica President James C. Liao (廖俊智), former Vice President Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁), and Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲).
Lai noted that the South Campus's research would complement the northern campus in Nangang (南港), creating a technology corridor connected by the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR, 高鐵).
He stated that promoting balanced development in Taiwan has been one of his essential tasks since he took office as president. In the next 20 years, there will be significant demand for setting up technology industries, and regions with land and resources like water and electricity will have advantages.
James C. Liao expressed that the South Campus will prioritize quantum and net-zero research.
