TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) caucus condemned China's continued pressure on Taiwan across diplomatic, defense, and international fronts on Tuesday (Oct. 15). The statement followed Taiwan's last-minute shift in representation at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
DPP caucus Secretary-General Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) emphasized that Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁), President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) initial choice for APEC envoy, is well-qualified in academia, economics, and global affairs. However, media reports suggest China protested to the host nation, leading Peru to withhold approval for Chen's attendance.
Due to the diplomatic row, Acer (宏碁) founder Stan Shih (施振榮) will represent Taiwan at the summit. Peru is expected to confirm Shih's participation with a formal invitation on Oct. 17. The APEC Peru 2024 summit, scheduled for Nov. 10-16, will be the third time Peru has hosted the event, having previously done so in 2016 and 2008.
