HUALIEN (TVBS News) — In a tragic hunting mishap, a man died in Hualien County on Monday (Oct. 14) after a hunter mistook him for a wild boar and shot him. The Hualien County Fire Department (花蓮縣消防局) reported the incident occurred at 10:31 p.m. in the Tatana community (石平部落) of Zhuoxi Township (卓溪鄉), where they found the victim without signs of life.
An initial investigation by the Hualien County Police Department (花蓮縣警察局) revealed that a 62-year-old man surnamed Su and his 43-year-old friend surnamed Chen were hunting with firearms when they accidentally shot a 23-year-old man surnamed Ma from a neighboring tribe.
The shooter, who reported the incident, said he mistook the victim for a wild boar and shot him. He attempted CPR on the victim and guided emergency personnel to the scene. Police detained Su and Chen at the scene and seized three shotguns, rubber bullets, and steel balls as evidence. Authorities confirmed all three shotguns were registered according to regulations.
The case will be sent to the Hualien District Prosecutors Office (花蓮地檢署) for further investigation under charges related to "Offenses of Homicide" (殺人罪) and the "Controlling Guns, Ammunition and Knives Act" (槍砲彈藥刀械管制條例).
