TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) announced Monday (Oct. 14) that Taiwan's military remains on high alert despite the conclusion of the "Joint Sword-2024B" (聯合利劍-2024B) military exercises announced by China's People's Liberation Army (PLA, 解放軍).
The PLA's Eastern Theater Command declared the drills, which aimed to test integrated joint operations capabilities, a successful completion on the same day.
Sun Li-fang (孫立方), a spokesperson for the MND, emphasized the military's vigilance in the Taiwan Strait, explaining that the army will continue to maintain a 24-hour standing alert, and even after the drills are over. There will be no let-up, he added. Sun noted that while most Chinese military aircraft and ships have left the area, many coast guard vessels remain.
The MND aims to adjust its response levels and measures based on observed Chinese military activity. The ongoing presence of Chinese coast guard vessels signals continued tension in the region. Authorities said they highlight the importance of readiness amid regional uncertainties.
