TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Organizers confirmed on Wednesday (Oct. 9) that former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) will attend the National Day ceremony as a distinguished guest. The event will unfold at the plaza in front of the Presidential Office Building, with Chen's nameplate prominently placed in the central VIP section's front row.
Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), serving as the "National Day Preparatory Committee's" (國慶籌備委員會) chair for the first time, has invited key figures from major political parties. However, Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), embroiled in the controversial Core Pacific Case (京華城案), remains detained and cannot attend. Despite this, Han reserved a seat for him.
Han invited also Ko's wife, Peggy Chen (陳佩琪), to the National Day gala. Yet, the TPP announced that she declined due to her poor psychological condition. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will deliver a national policy speech at the National Day celebration ceremony, and many are anticipating his latest stance on cross-strait relations.
Han will also speak at the event, marking a rare occasion where prominent figures from the Kuomintang (國民黨, KMT) and Democratic Progressive Party (民進黨, DPP) share the stage.
