TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Department of Urban Development, Taipei City (台北市都市發展局) announced a plan on Thursday (Sept. 19) to assist newlyweds and families with young children by providing 156 rental housing units. This initiative aims to ease the burden of living and renting in Taipei.
According to the Department of Land Administration (地政局), Taipei's standard housing price of 3.30579 square meters (1坪) reached NT$736,000 in December 2023. The Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Executive Yuan (行政院主計總處) reported that the average annual household expenditure in Taipei was NT$1.09 million in 2023.
In the first phase, the project will release 156 units in Xinyi (信義區), Zhongshan (中山區), and Wenshan (文山區) districts by late October. The department stated that rental periods could extend to 12 years if tenants' children attend elementary schools in the designated areas. Rent will be about 30% below market rates, with subsidies ranging from NT$3,000 to NT$11,000 based on family income.
The project utilizes various methods to acquire housing resources, including public land participation in urban renewal and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) incentives. The department hopes this policy will provide more housing options for newlyweds and young families, encouraging them to settle and raise children in Taipei.
