TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Captain Hsieh Pei-hsun (謝沛勳) is now in stable condition following his crash the day before, according to Dr. Wei Chih-wei (魏智偉), director of the emergency department at Tungs' Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital (童綜合醫院). Hsieh was forced to eject from his Mirage-2000 jet after it lost power during a nighttime training flight on Tuesday.
Dr. Wei explained that Hsieh's ejection subjected him to significant gravitational forces, causing him to land on his back in the sea. Initially, doctors feared internal bleeding, spinal injuries, or pulmonary edema. Fortunately, Captain Hsieh sustained only minor neck and back bruises.
Medical staff will continue to monitor Hsieh for changes in his cervical and thoracic spine and signs of inhalation pneumonia. Dr. Wei noted that Hsieh is conscious, responsive, and accompanied by his wife. The doctor further described Hsieh's condition, saying that he could get out of bed and use the restroom independently and that there was no issue with returning to duty.
