TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's pet population has now surpassed the number of children under 15, according to a projection by the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER, 台灣經濟研究院) released Tuesday (Sept. 10). TIER's 2023 forecast estimates the pet industry at NT$63.1 billion, with pet food making up nearly half at NT$30.8 billion.
Liu I-chen (劉依蓁), head of Research Division VII at TIER, pointed out during the Animal Precision Nutrition International Forum that the number of dogs and cats in Taiwan is expected to rise further. This trend is attributed to low birth rates and shifting societal dynamics.
The Ministry of Agriculture’s (MOA, 農業部) biennial survey estimated Taiwan's 2023 pet population at 1.48 million dogs and 1.31 million cats, representing increases of 19% and 50%, respectively, since 2021.
Liu highlighted that general pet food accounts for NT$25.6 billion, while supplements contribute NT$5.1 billion. She also noted that Taiwanese pet owners allocate half of their pet-related spending to food, with supplements growing at a faster rate than general pet food.
In 2018, TIER found that pet owners prioritize efficacy, safety, and their pets’ health history over whether products are imported or domestic. Liu added that price is not a primary concern for most pet owners.
