TAIPEI (TVBS News) —  The representative at the British Office in Taipei (英國在台辦事處) described Taiwan and the U.K. as partners in the semiconductor sector on Wednesday (Sept. 4).

John Dennis made the comment on the sidelines of SEMICON Taiwan (國際半導體展), where the U.K. pavilion emerged as the third-largest, showcasing 24 British tech companies eager to explore collaboration opportunities.

Dr. Dave Smith, the U.K.'s National Technology Adviser, emphasized Taiwan's leadership in semiconductor manufacturing. He noted the U.K.'s strengths in R&D and open markets and desired mutually beneficial partnerships with like-minded regions such as Taiwan.

Innovate U.K. hosted a briefing session on Wednesday, allowing each participating British company to present. Over the next two days, they will discuss compound semiconductors, silicon photonics, memory, equipment, testing, manufacturing, and materials in depth.

The British Office Taipei highlighted the U.K.'s global fourth-place ranking in semiconductor research publications for 2019 and 2020. The U.K. excels in advanced packaging, advanced materials, and silicon photonics. It also houses 140 design companies and boasts the world's first compound semiconductor cluster, CSConnected, in South Wales.
