TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A top executive from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC, 台積電) highlighted Taiwan's strong semiconductor foundation on Tuesday (Sept. 3), stressing Taiwan's relative advantages to entering the silicon photonics field.
A day before the 2024 SEMICON Taiwan (國際半導體展) will kick off, Silicon Photonics held the "Silicon Photonics Global Summit" earlier that day, titled "Unleashing the Power of Silicon Photonics: Innovations, Integration, and Impact."
During his speech, K.C. Hsu (徐國晉), vice president of Integrated Interconnect & Packaging at TSMC, stressed the semiconductor industry's evolution over the past six to seven decades.
The entire industry has gradually developed different component designs and has long focused on the development and application of CMOS research technology. Hsu commented that energy saving is a very important advantage of CMOS.
He added that CMOS technology has become mainstream in commercial applications, with clearer upstream and downstream integration.
Hsu believes that forming an industry alliance will help push related technical specifications and agreements, integrating upstream and downstream cooperation. He expressed confidence that Taiwan could become a significant base for the AI industry as research and manufacturing capabilities expand.
