TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, Inc. (ASE, 日月光半導體) head underscored on Monday (Sept. 3) the pivotal role of semiconductors during the pandemic, emphasizing Taiwan's emergence on the global stage due to the rapid AI development.

ASE CEO Tien Wu (吳田玉) addressed a pre-event press conference for SEMICON Taiwan 2024, the highly anticipated international semiconductor expo, which will commence on Wednesday, and delivered the keynote address "Golden Moment: Opportunities and Challenges" (黃金時刻,機會與挑戰).

Wu remarked that AI development brings significant changes and new opportunities, but it also comes with substantial challenges, including hardware shortages, geopolitical issues, and the need for comprehensive integration.

Meanwhile, Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei (郭智輝) shared his perspective, asserting that AI will revolutionize various aspects of human life, from daily activities to healthcare.

This year's SEMICON Taiwan will focus on trending topics such as AI, advanced processes, heterogeneous integration, silicon photonics, compound semiconductors, and smart mobility.

The Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA, 台灣半導體產業協會) reported that Taiwan's IC industry output reached approximately NT$4.34 trillion in 2023, with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI, 工研院) forecasting this year's total output to surpass NT$5 trillion.
